Canyon De Chelly is a system of several very beautiful canyons. There are lots of ruins, some of which are tucked into the most improbable and even impossible looking alcoves. These canyons have been continuously inhabited for 5,000 years, with each subsequent group leaving remnants of the earlier inhabitants. Navajo people still farm and graze within the canyons today. It felt really different to be a tourist there than it felt to be a tourist at most American national parks or even in Ecuador. It is clear that the Navajo people appreciated our dollars, but it didn't always feel like our presence was entirely wanted. Given our history I can't blame them for feeling animosity toward non-Navajo Americans.
