Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measures travel time, which is related to both the thickness of the snow and the radar velocity in snow. Here Dan is using a probe to verify the thickness. We do this periodically, allowing us to calculate the radar velocity. The velocity is a function of snow density, so these calculations get checked again with the densities measured in snow-pits.
