Five of us spent the week after thanksgiving hunting caribou on Adak. The place is really weird. It was a Navy base from 1943-1997. After the Navy pulled out the population dropped from over 6,000 all the way down to about 80 now, so the place is basically a ghost town. The Caribou are not native on the island, they were apparently introduced in the 1940's as an emergency food source for the Navy base. The herd is now supposedly about 3,000, and they are quickly eating themselves out of nutrition on the 270 square mi island. The weather was not very nice while we were there, but we did manage to get a couple of caribou.
