Melting permafrost causes a massive slump on the bank of the Noatak River near Kavachurak Creek. In this area the river passes through a series of small terminal moraines. Permafrost has protected stranded pieces of glacial ice for thousands of years. As the river erodes along cutbanks these pieces of ice are exposed to the surface and melting. Noatak National Preserve, Brooks Range, Alaska.
